WELCOME MESSAGE FROM MIKE VIOLETTE, GENERAL CHAIR, EMC+SIPI 2017

Mike VioletteDear Treasured Exhibitors,

I was at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Shanghai recently and was wowed—and somewhat bemused—at the array of offerings.

Why wowed? The shift in technology to mobile applications in the past few years has been amazing. Connected cars, wearables, even a bicycle fitted with a cellular modem were on display.

Why bemused? One company was offering an autonomous suitcase that can follow you through the airport. Cute little thing: a droid to lug your dainties as you rush to meet a connection. It was also amusing to watch goggled attendees slash and shoot at virtual monsters (to avoid accidentally lashing out and poking bystanders, the player was leashed to a pole).

Three-D printing machines were busy oozing plastic goo to create three-dimensional Iron Man helmets. Drones whizzed around, taking photos of the action. Comely models beckoned a second look at autonomous vehicles.

I sent the images to my China team via WeChat, one of whom commented: “These new devices are all electrical! They need international certification. We have a large market in the future.

Yes, indeed. A large market for sure.

This means a couple of things for the EMC and Signal Integrity and Power Integrity community. All this technology needs excellent design, modeling, analysis, measurement, components, filtering, spectrum management, interference control and to apply our combined knowledge to the connected world.

And this is just the consumer side of things. Applications in aerospace, manufacturing, defense, energy, health and security are all equally in need of good EMC and fine design.

At the 2017 IEEE EMC and SIPI Symposium in Washington DC, your contribution to the state-of-the-art will be on display for our international technology community.

The Washington DC area is a nexus of all things technology, with a diverse base of technology companies, government regulatory bodies, defense industries, health science, academia and great engineering talent. It’s also a great place to bring the family. Need I say there are more than a few museums and parks and playgrounds for all ages.

“EMC+SIPI 2017” will be held at the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center, on the banks of the serene and picturesque Potomac. The 100,000 s.f. of exhibit hall is a short escalator ride from the technical programs, co-located with the Gaylord Hotel, the headquarter hotel for the Symposium.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee and the IEEE EMC Society, I am delighted to invite you to exhibit and hope to see you in DC in 2017.

Sincerely,
Mike Violette, General Chair
